Buying and Selling Used Items
Thursday, December 29th, 2011 By Lenox
In our current trend topic discussion we asked couples (N=66) if they would consider buying something for their wedding secondhand or used. 59 people or 89.4% said that yes they would, while 7, or 10.6% said that they would not consider buying something for their wedding secondhand or used. We then asked what reservations they had about buying wedding items secondhand or used with responses including the items’ condition and wear. Responses also included the desire for new items and that while buying something used or secondhand may save money, it would not even be an option. We then asked couples (N=59) what items they would consider buying secondhand or used, checking all that applied. Responses can be seen the chart below.

We then asked couples about selling items from their wedding. We first asked couples (N=66) if they would consider selling items from the wedding with 60, or 90.9% saying that yes they would, while 6 or 9.1% said they would not. When asked what reservations they had in selling their wedding items with responses including wanting to save their wedding items for friends and family who may need/want them, not thinking anyone else would want their items and not wanting to let go of memories attached to the items. We asked couples (N=60) what items they would consider selling secondhand or used (similar to the above question about buying), checking all that applied. Responses can be seen the chart below.

Results from this round of questioning show us that couples are open to buying and selling wedding items at a fairly similar percentage rate though a difference can be seen in how they would buy and sell such items. While couples are more inclined to buy secondhand wedding items in person rather than online, they would rather sell their own wedding items online than in person. Buying and selling accessories were the most popular item while there was a large difference in jewelry. While 78% of those surveyed indicated they would buy jewelry for their wedding secondhand, only 30% would sell their wedding jewelry.
